Less known than the other legends featured on Downtown Sessions, Leroy Brown is nonetheless an essential figure in 1970s reggae. His 1981 album Color Barrier is a nugget that connoisseurs are snapping up at a premium. This is due to the quality of Leroy Brown's lyrics. A fine lyricist, Brown has a sharp pen when commenting on the society of his time. He was part of the human rights movement instigated by the American black power movement at the turn of the 1970s. In addition to his fine lyrics, Leroy Brown was produced by Robbie Shakespeare of the duo Sly & Robbie (Gainsbourg, Grace Jones, Peter Tosh, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker,...), which explains the quality of the music that conveys the singer's message.

‘TIMES TOUGH' is in keeping with the legacy of Leroy Brown's great lyrics: a sharp social critique, finely crafted on an aerial instrumental that subtly embellishes the singer's melodies with guitar, clavinet and moog synthesizer interventions. Committed roots reggae in all its splendour!
