RAS MICHAEL is probably the most Rasta of all Rasta artists. The charismatic singer and drummer of The Sons of Negus, Ras Michael had a decisive impact on the lives of many young Jamaican singers and musicians who attended his grounation – the Rasta liturgical ceremony – and who then adopted the way of life that Michael preached. Legendary drummer Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace says that listening to Ras Michael in the 1970s was like hearing spears of fire shooting out of his voice and drum.
With albums such as Peace and Love (1974, under the alias Dadawah), Rastafari (1975), and Movements (1978), Ras Michael is the embodiment of the blend of traditional Rasta music, nyahbinghi, and Jamaican popular music, reggae. He is the emblem of Rasta reggae in all its strength and splendour.
Now 79 years old, Ras Michael has lost none of his verve. He still hosts hour-long grounations, gives concerts and creates new classics in the Rasta repertoire such as 'RIDE ON'. Recorded at Inna De Yard, Kingston, in the backyard of the famous guitarist Earl 'Chinna' Smith, 'Ride On' is a creation of The 18th Parallel, for the occasion accompanied by Horsemouth Wallace, but also by the Inna De Yard singers, a group of singers led by the rasta leader of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, Sangie Davis. Born of a true moment of communion between the Jamaican veterans and the Swiss musicians, 'Ride On' is a magnificent testimony to the vivacity and spontaneous creativity of Kingston's musical life. This track takes us back to the best years of Rasta roots reggae.
