MAX ROMEO is without doubt one of the greatest singers Jamaica has ever known. As much for his social and political activism as for his voice, he is one of the few Rasta singers to have captured the hearts of fans around the world and to continue his work unabated after a career spanning more than fifty years. With iconic albums such as the 1976 Lee "Scratch" Perry-produced War Ina Babylon and the more recent Horror Zone and Words From The Brave, Max Romeo is one of the last remaining roots reggae legends still active and prolific today at nearly 80 years old.
Less known to the general public, I KONG is nevertheless the author of some of the most profound Rasta anthems of the golden age of roots reggae: 'The Way It Is' recorded in 1972, then the album of the same name released in 1979, are true masterpieces orchestrated by the genius producer Geoffrey Chung (Serge Gainsbourg, Peter Tosh, Pablo Moses,...). The track 'Life's Road' is a poignant testament to that era, and 45 years later, I Kong still conveys the same emotional intensity when he sings it, as evidenced by the video released in 2015 with the band Najavibes (4M views).
The story of MAX ROMEO and I KONG goes back to their youth: Max lived with I Kong's mother. While I Kong was developing his project with the future singer of Third World Bunny Rugs (Ricky & Bunny), Max asked him to write songs for him. I Kong's lyricism was outstanding and he wrote the superb 'Poorman's Life' and 'Take A Hold' on Max's album Reconstruction. Both are anthems of Kingston's sufferers' lives. Yet the two long-time friends had never recorded together until now. ‘JUST LIKE THE RAINBOW' is the first vocal collaboration between the two singers. Over a beautiful instrumental by Swiss band The 18th Parallel, accompanied by the occasional Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace on drums, I Kong sings with a baritone voice a message of hope, as he knows how to write them so well. He is accompanied by Max's high-pitched voice, which completes the duo perfectly. All this is supported by the backing vocals of the Spanish vocal trio The Emeterians. A text worthy of the best years of I Kong, musical arrangements faithful to Geoffrey Chung's vision of The Way It Is and a Max Romeo more poignant than ever. Simply sublime!
